History

The historical data on Fleckenstein Castle are quite scant. In 1174, a Gottfried von Fleckenstein, who belonged to a family of imperial ministerials, was first mentioned, and thus indirectly also the castle. However, a capital that was found in the castle ruins dates back to the early 12th century, so it is certain that the castle was built then at the latest, i.e. more than 50 years before the first mention. At the time of its construction, the castle was located on a road that connected the Hohenstaufen imperial palaces of Hagenau and Kaiserslautern; Fleckenstein Castle was therefore of strategic importance.

In 1276, King Rudolf of Habsburg besieged Heinrich von Fleckenstein in order to free Friedrich von Bolanden, the Bishop of Speyer, who had been imprisoned by him; However, it is not known whether the siege directly affected Fleckenstein Castle or another castle belonging to this family, which was widespread and influential in the Middle Ages.

Fleckenstein Castle is worth a visit. There is a 3-4 hour treasure hunt for children through the forest and around the castle. If you solve the puzzle correctly, you can have your photo taken there for free and receive the photo as a gift.
The castle invites you to explore. There is a beautiful view of the castle itself and the surrounding area. In the restaurant there is lovingly prepared salad, various tarte flambées and everything else you get in beer gardens. The service was very friendly.

This is also a good place to take a break. The restaurant serves small meals, ice cream and of course something to drink. You can also take a break under cover and enjoy your own food. There is a small shop with brochures, small wooden swords, etc. You can also get an entrance ticket to the castle there, as of July 2024 for 5 euros. If you have a dog or a stroller, you should let them know when you buy it! You can usually only get in and out through a turnstile, but there is a proper door for dogs and strollers. There are lots of stairs in the castle that lead to beautiful views.

Due to its dimensions (length: 92 m, average width: 12 m, average height: 26 m), Fleckenstein Castle is considered one of the most powerful and impressive castles in the Northern Vosges Mountains. The Barony was among the most important in the region. Divided into six bailiwicks, it owned a total of 35 villages. The Fleckenstein family played a political role as early as the 12th century. The family line died out in 1720.

Fleckenstein Castle has been rebuilt several times. Little remains of the original medieval castle, apart from the main entrance. At the beginning of the 14th century, the inner courtyard was lowered by several meters and surrounded by a curtain wall. A staircase hewn into the rock leads to the rock platform. The castle chapel was located above the original entrance hall, now a museum. The well is protected by a massive shaft tower.

From the beginning of the 15th century, a massive rectangular barbican fortified the main entrance.
