The Francis turbine is a universally applicable water turbine named after the engineer James B. Francis from the USA, in which the impeller is flown radially from the outside.

Today, Francis turbines are mostly designed as spiral turbines. The inflowing water is distributed over a snail-shaped housing, the volute, with additional twist and evenly around the circumference of the turbine before it enters the vane ring. Turbines without this volute casing are referred to as shaft turbines. They are less efficient than spiral turbines and are now only used in small hydroelectric power plants with a low head.

In Francis turbines, the water enters the impeller tangentially and exits axially. A ring of guide vanes with adjustable guide vanes regulates the inflow of water onto the blades of the impeller, which are curved in opposite directions, which deflects them in the direction of the impeller axis. After flowing through the impeller, the water is discharged through a suction pipe acting as a diffuser in the extension of the turbine axis.
