The Wilsberg spoil heap is a rather small slag heap located in Herzogenrath-Kohlscheid. The spoil originates from the Laurweg mine, whose shafts were filled in 1966. From the top, there is a beautiful view to the south towards the Lousberg and the edge of the Eifel region, and as far north as Kerkrade.

Behind the old locations of Wilsberg and Mevenheide lies the former tailings heap of the Laurweg mine, the Wilsberg heap - or in the vernacular the "coal mountain".
It is green, with footpaths and a viewing plateau with a limestone compass rose.

The oldest documented hard coal mine in Central Europe was located in the Wurmtal southwest of Herzogenrath. In Herzogenrath-Kohlscheid there were the Kämpchen, Laurweg, Spidell and Sichelscheid pits. The Wilsberg tailings dump was created from the overburden of the Laurweg pit, which was in operation until 1966. This relatively small heap is the southernmost of the Aachen mining area.
From the top you have a beautiful view to the south of the Lousberg and the edge of the Eifel and to Kerkrade in the north.
