De Soeverein is the name of both a sports park and a conference center in Lommel. Anyone who takes a walk in 'the Sahara', a part of Bosland in Lommel, cannot miss the building of the congress centre. It has been a starting point for many years with its many parking facilities. The building is also special and was designed by the Venice-born architect and designer Tobia Scarpa in 1935, son of the prominent architect Carlo Scarpa who died in 1978. In addition to De Soeverein, his son Scarpa also designed the Palazzetto dello Sport in Salerno and the Palazzo del Mercato Vecchio in Verona. He works together with his wife Afra. Together they also did work for companies such as Benetton. The basic configuration of De Soeverein is a circle, which should refer to the classic image of the arena, a building volume with no pronounced front or side facades.
