At the end of the 15th century, Maximilian I, son of Emperor Friedrich III, built a Gothic double spiral staircase, which is now a highlight of the castle. Two stairs running in opposite directions come together on each floor, only to separate again immediately afterwards. It is often interpreted as a symbol for eternity and was nicknamed the Reconciliation Staircase, as separate paths merge here again and again.
