At the sight of the Knights Street, it takes little imagination to imagine how once aristocrats from all over Europe, the cobblestones romped here. The Knights Street was the main street of the neighborhood called Collachium. Many of your hospitals and arsenals have been built here. Here the knights received visitors, celebrated festivals and ate together. They did not live in the hostels, but in the private rooms of the Knights' Town. The street running straight on to the street begins at the city wall, which lies on the harbor side, and ends at the Grand Master's Palace. It was built on the route of an ancient road. It is the only fully preserved 16th century residential street in Greece and one of the few in Europe.

Ritterstrasse, Rhodes old town

The houses built in the late Gothic style, bear numerous stone escutcheons, as a sign of the Order and various grandmasters. After the fall of the Crusaders in 1523, rich Turkish families moved into the former dwelling of grandmasters. So that the houses corresponded to their style, they built wooden bay windows on the facades. If you walk through the Knights Street today, you realize that there are no more of these bay windows. They tore off the Italians during their occupation, because they wanted to bring the houses back to their original state. Today, most of the Ritterstrasse houses offices.
