The Grand Master's Palace of Rhodes was built in the 14th century as the residence of the Grand Master of the Order of St. John in Rhodes on the island of Rhodes. After the Ottoman conquest of the island in 1522, he served as a prison and powder magazine.
Seriously damaged by an ammunition explosion in 1856, the palace was rebuilt and enlarged during the Italian reign (1912-1943) until 1940. This reconstruction is now seen as part of the politically determined monumental construction program of fascism in Rhodes partly critical. Original still preserved is the entrance area with its impressive towers. The newly built palace was intended as the residence of the Italian king and later as the seat for Benito Mussolini. Both did not come to use him as such.
