Built between 1833 and 1838 at the behest of Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria, the Fortezza Fort stands on the shores of Lake Fortezza. The task of the fort was to guarantee the safety of traffic along the Brenner road up to the Upper Isarco Valley. Nowadays, the fort has become a museum.

Built between 1833 and 1838 under Emperor Franz I of Austria, it was one of the safest fortresses in the Alpine region of its time - built for the purpose of securing the axis between southern Germany and northern Italy in the Habsburg Empire.
65,000 square meters of area make the Franzenfeste the largest historical complex in South Tyrol. In addition to an estimated 20 million bricks and 250,000 cubic meters of granite, many tons of wood, sand and lime were used. The adaptation to the terrain, the fire fronts, bomb-proof gun positions, a labyrinth of tunnels and passageways, speak for the planning masterpiece. The fortress had already lost its strategic importance by the time it was completed. There was never any confrontation with the enemy; now and again companies were quartered there, but they were only waiting for a deployment in the south. Ultimately, the fortress served mainly as a weapons and ammunition depot for the Italian military until 2003.

With its 65,000 square meters of surface area, the Hapsburg Fort of Fortezza is the largest historical site in all of South Tyrol. The construction of this masterpiece of Austrian wartime architecture was started in 1833, under Emperor Francis I; the work was completed in just five years and inaugurated in 1838 by Emperor Ferdinand I. However, by then the fort had already lost its strategic importance and therefore also its purpose. The enormous expenditure of manpower and materials and the huge costs incurred for its construction had been in vain. Since then the gigantic fortification was downgraded and used as a warehouse, becoming a carefully guarded military site, but which fell almost into oblivion for over a century and a half.

When finally, in 2003, the Italian Army decided to abandon the Fort, a courageous group of Fortezza volunteers took on the task of cleaning up the area, first of all freeing it from the luxuriant vegetation that had grown almost everywhere, as well as from the rubble and dust.

Opened to the public in 2005, in the following years the Fort underwent a demanding but prudent renovation to host two important events, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art Manifesta 7, held in 2008, and the 2009 edition of the "SüdtirolerLandesausstellung", the interregional event organized by the Province of Bolzano in collaboration with the Province of Trento and Land Tyrol. Since then the Fort has been a much appreciated location for exhibitions and events of all kinds. Owned by the Province of Bolzano since 2013, in January 2017 the Fortress of Fortezza became a Provincial Museum, and precisely the tenth and last museum to become part of the Provincial Museums Company.
