The Franzensfeste near the town of the same name in what is now South Tyrol (Italy) was built from 1833 to 1838 under Emperor Ferdinand I and named after Emperor Franz I of Austria, the monarch during the planning phase. It was intended to secure the important transport connection through the upper Wipptal via the Brenner to the north.
