The Evangelical Lutheran St. Mary's Church in Basthorst bears the name of the Mother of God Mary and was in earlier times a place of pilgrimage "To the Holy Body"; important annual markets were held twice a year.

The old St. Mary's Church was first mentioned in 1319, but it was demolished in 1856 because it was in a state of disrepair.

The current church was redesigned and built in 1857-59 with considerable financial sacrifices from the estate and the four villages belonging to the parish, namely Basthorst, Dahmker, Möhnsen and Mühlenrade, under the construction management of the then patron and landowner Joseph Baron von Bruxelles and by C.A.Lohmeyer.

The church is a single-nave, neo-Gothic fieldstone church with a recessed five-eighths choir made of bricks and a 43-meter-high west tower with a pointed helmet, which points to the church from all sides.
The nave has five wooden cross-ribbed vaults and a pointed choir arch. When looking at the fieldstone walls, it is noticeable that the mighty windows were built in a pointed shape and that no layering of the stones was preferred, as in other buildings.
