The nature reserve Michelsbach, Ahbach and Aulbach with side streams is located in the municipality of Blankenheim (Ahr) in the district of Euskirchen. The area, consisting of eight sub-areas, stretches south-east of the core town of Blankenheim and east of the Blankenheim district of Dollendorf. The federal highway 258 runs through it and the Ahr flows. State road 115 runs to the west. The nature reserve is part of the EU bird sanctuary "Ahrgebirge".

This NSG extends to three completely different stream systems. The largest is the Michelsbach, which flows as a natural meandering stream in the middle of a clearly developed floodplain. The valley floor is occupied by riparian and gallery forests that accompany the stream, and in places the water is flanked by species-rich wet and fresh meadows and pastures. Also included in the protected area were small side Siefen, on the steeper valley sides of which species-rich lean meadows are cultivated.

The Aulbach, on the other hand, is a typical example of a Kerbtalbach. On its relatively short course it drops steeply towards the Ahraue, its steep flanks being occupied exclusively by forest. Only in its lower reaches does it flow through pastures, some of which are covered with fruit trees.

The part of the Ahbach system located in North Rhine-Westphalia differs significantly from the aforementioned streams. The Ahbach is one of the largest tributaries of the Ahr. Its floodplain, dominated by wet meadows, fallow land and riparian forests, is wide and largely close to nature. The tributaries Klausbach and Menziger Bach, like the Ahbach, arise in Kalk. Their floodplains are also dominated by wet meadows and fresh meadows, with occasional pasture use. There are small areas of fallow land with large sedge patches and a lime swamp.

Various limestone grasslands on the valley flanks are floristically interesting. In addition, there is the ruderalized area of the former railway line below Ahrdorf. With its open gravel areas, it is an important habitat for heat-loving species of reptiles, butterflies and grasshoppers.
