The building history of the Walpurgis Church has been made accessible through excavations in 1971/72. The starting point was a relatively small Romanesque transept basilica in the area of today's nave. The core of today's building is formed by an early Gothic transept basilica from the middle of the 13th century, which was initially laid out around the original building and was only completed after its demolition with three low pairs of pillars. This Gothic church building included a choir building, which was replaced from 1393 by the existing late Gothic choir, which was one yoke longer and higher. The console figures attached to the buttresses show a clear influence by the sculptural art of the Prague cathedral master builder Peter Parler. On January 25, 1394, the original tower collapsed and was then rebuilt, the current octagonal tower with hood was only completed in 1543. The early Gothic nave was expanded from the middle of the 15th century by raising the pillars inside to form a hall church, completed in 1472, with the remains of the old nave walls remaining intact.

Main municipal church with a complicated architectural history, which is reflected in both the internal design and the external structure. The oldest was in the form of a small 3-apse basilica, proven by the uncovering of the foundations in 1971/72. An early Gothic basilica with an elongated but low choir and west tower was built around this in the late 13th century. In the late Gothic period from 1993 onwards, the choir was rebuilt in an extended and much higher form. The planned new construction of the nave did not take place; rather, the existing basilica was converted into a kind of hall church in 1472 and later by raising and widening the side aisles and breaking out high arcades. After the early Gothic tower collapsed in 1394, it was rebuilt, only completed in 1542 with an octagonal floor and a Renaissance hood, and in 1836 it was shortened by one floor. The tower keeper's apartment was here until 1921. Today traditional Christmas child rocking and May bubbles. Interior furnishings: Romanesque baptismal font, late Gothic frescoes, carved altar, choir stalls, Baroque epitaphs and late Gothic crucifixion group.

The Gothic Walpurgis Church is Alsfeld's main evangelical church. The start of construction is dated to the second half of the 13th century. The nave was converted into a church hall in the 15th century. The original tower of the church collapsed in 1394, but was rebuilt. However, construction work on the tower was only completed in 1543. In 1836 the tower was shortened by one floor.
The interior of the church is characterized today by a total glazing that was created in 1963 by Charles Crodel and Theo Kellner.
The Walpuris Church has a peal of seven bells, the youngest of which dates from 1617. The oldest bell dates from 1333.
