On the railway viaduct of Eifa, the Alsfeld - Niederaula - Bad Hersfeld railway, the so-called Gründchenbahn, crossed the meadow valley of the Eifa to the west of today's Alsfeld district. The section of this railway line between Grebenau and Alsfeld was opened on April 1, 1916.

The viaduct, built in reinforced concrete since 1913, spans the valley in eight arches over a length of 230 m. The bridge is 22 m high. Despite the concrete construction, the viaduct has striking decorative elements in the pilaster strips, the parapet and in the bay windows above the pillars.

Passenger traffic on the 31.3 km long route between Niederaula and Alsfeld was discontinued on May 25, 1974. Freight traffic on the Alsfeld - Eifa section (with the railway viaduct) continued until May 28, 1988. The railway viaduct, which characterizes the landscape, has been inoperative since the Eifa-Alsfeld section was closed. However, it is a listed building for technical and historical reasons.

Freight service on the Alsfeld–Eifa section (including the railway viaduct) continued until May 28, 1988. The prominent railway viaduct has been out of service since the Eifa-Alsfeld section of the line was closed. However, it is a listed building for technical and historical reasons.
