The Puente Colgante is a suspension bridge that connects the former fishing towns of Getxo and Portugalete. Via the floating construction, both vehicles and passengers can be transported between these two towns 365 days a year. This hanging bridge, also called Puente Bizkaia, is located 10 kilometers from the center of Bilbao.

The metal Puente Bizkaia was built in 1893 by Alberto Palacio with the aim of linking the two banks of the mouth of the River Nervión without hindering shipping. Palacio was a student of the famous Gustave Eiffel (The Designer of the Eiffel Tower). Puente colgante means 'suspension bridge' in Spanish, but officially it is a suspension bridge with a length of 164 meters over the river Ría del Nervión, which also flows right through the city of Bilbao. The bridge Puente Bizkaia is located just before the point where the Nervión flows into the Cantabrian Sea. Since 2006, the Puente Colgante has also been on the UNESCO World Heritage List, partly because the bridge was an engineering marvel with the most modern techniques in its time. The 'Puente Bizkaia' bridge was considered the triumphal arch of the newly formed industrial civilization from the beginning.
