Originally, the castle had formed a considerable complex of buildings surrounded by mighty trees. The main building was the castle, which still bears the coat of arms of the Bussche family (heavily weathered) on the back. These were 1391-1395 owner of the castle. The ruin therefore has an age of over 570 years. On the north side was a side wing of the castle, which was built in the upper floors in half-timbered construction. The elevators of the roof structure still protrude from the masonry today. The back of the house formed the elongated horse house, to which the gatehouse (south) adjoined at right angles. Between the gatehouse and the castle was a connection building. Leaning against the main building was a mighty keep that covered the frontage. There were also towers on the north and south sides that controlled these areas. Access to the castle was via a dam that led from Lemförder Straße from the south to the castle. Here was also the drawbridge. The building complex was about 63 x 53 meters. The size of the building complex was established in 1969 by means of spot excavations and marked by boulders in the south (site of the museum court) and in the north (home park). In 1649, after the Peace of Westphalia, the castle passed into the Brandenburg possession. Already in episcopal time she served as a stately Vorwerk predominantly agricultural purposes. In 1647 59 cattle and 318 sheep were kept here.
