In 1323, Prince Henry the Lion founded a monastery for the Poor Clares, who particularly revered their founder and rule-giver, Saint Clare of Assisi (1193 - 1253). Richly endowed with land, the monastery quickly developed into an important convent.

The monastery complex with its Gothic church is a small treasure trove. Much of the medieval furnishings have been preserved to this day. The exhibition "Lady of the world, but also nun" on the history of the monastery and abbey leads through the monastery church and shows the many treasures of the monastery. Visitors can trace the life of the Poor Clares and discover interesting facts about the history of Mecklenburg's region and nobility.

Monastery for the Order of the Poor Clares, who especially admires Saint Clare of Assisi (1193-1253) as its founder and ruler. It remained the only monastery of this order in Mecklenburg. Richly endowed with land, it quickly became a major convent. At the top was usually a daughter from the Mecklenburg princely house. A monastic chronicle written in Low German tells in detail about the fortunes of the monastery. The transcript made by the former Franciscan monk and reading master of the nuns, Lambrecht Slaggert from Stralsund between 1522 to 1533, is a unique testimony of Northern European monastic history.

The Poor Clares' Monastery - also known as St. Clares' Monastery Ribnitz or St. Claren's Monastery - was a monastery of the Poor Clares and, after the Reformation, until the 20th century, a Protestant women's convent in the town of Ribnitz in Mecklenburg.
