The 5,000-square-meter rose garden was redesigned in 1993 in a classical style. Approximately 300 different rose varieties – historic and English roses, shrub and wild roses, hybrid teas and floribunda roses, as well as climbing and standard roses – bloom here alongside perennials, small shrubs, and summer flowers. The beds are bordered by low boxwood hedges. Steel rose arches with blue rose balls complement the garden.

Several seating areas invite you to linger. At the center of the rose garden is an open pavilion. There, visitors can listen to classical music daily during the summer season.

The Citizen sundial was installed here in the Japanese Garden at Planten un Blomen in 1976. Not only can it determine the exact local time, the globe also shows the distribution of sunlight across the Earth at a precise location and time.

A curious feature is the time capsule located in the base of the clock. The clasp can be opened with a chisel in the years 2006, 2026, and 2076. The time capsule is then removed, filled with current documents from its generation, and resealed. The opening is then closed again. A fantastic idea for documenting contemporary history.
