Hidden in the house and garden of the Bout family, there was a shelter or house church here at 58 Kalverstraat in the 17th century. The house was called De Papegaai, and so was the church. From 1848 there were several renovations and extensions. The 19th-century vaults in the church are purely decorative: they are not made of stone, but of stucco. Much of the original inventory of the house church has been preserved and the church is generally open to the public.

The parrot itself is a stone carving found in the small neo-Gothic archway on Kalverstraat. The Papegaai was the code name for a 'school church' (hidden post-Reformation church) located behind the row of houses on Kalverstraat during the Reformation. The church is built in the so-called Stucco Gothic style and has a completely neo-Gothic interior. The small, delicate spire is the former bell tower of the Nieuwezijds Chapel and was relocated here after its demolition in 1908.
