Bosshardt became a member of the Salvation Army after attending one of their meetings when she was 18. Before that she was not religious. Her father was a converted Roman Catholic, her mother was Dutch Reformed. From 1934 she worked in a children's home in Amsterdam. During the German occupation in World War II, Bosshardt looked after the mostly Jewish children.

This building was for a long time the workplace of Major Bosshardt, the Netherlands' most beloved salvation soldier. As an 18-year-old girl, Alida Bosshardt joined the Salvation Army. During World War II, she worked in an Army children's home and helped countless Jewish children go into hiding.
Bosshardt always felt involved with prostitutes and the homeless. With a hundred guilders starting capital, she set up the first Goodwill Center in Amsterdam's Red Light District in 1948. She often visited the cafes in the red light district, including 't Mandje by Bet van Beeren, with whom she maintained a warm friendship. Bosshardt retired in 1978, but until she was 92 she continued to give lectures and peddle The Struggle Cry.
A bridge was recently named after Major Bosshardt, as a posthumous tribute to her great services to Amsterdam and the people of Amsterdam. The bridge over the Oudezijds Achterburgwal, between the Oudekennissteeg and the Molensteeg, is located in the middle of the major's former working area.

Majoor Bosshardt (born June 8, 1913 in Utrecht, † June 25, 2007 in Amsterdam; actually Alida Margaretha Bosshardt) was a Dutch Salvation Army officer who was elected one of the greatest Dutch women of all time in a vote in the Netherlands in 2004.
