The field chapel is dedicated to Saint Gerlachus van Houthem. The famous hermit lived at the beginning of the Middle Ages. He was originally a knight from Houthem, but after the death of his wife he left his hometown and went on a pilgrimage. When he returned, he decided to give up all luxury and lived a secluded life in a hollow oak tree.

This small field chapel on the outskirts of Gemert is dedicated to Saint Gerlach of Houthem, a saint venerated primarily by farmers and agriculturalists in this region. Gerlach lived in the early Middle Ages. Originally a knight from Houthem, he gave up his luxurious lifestyle after the death of his wife. After a long pilgrimage, he chose a secluded life and, according to tradition, even lived for a time in a hollow oak tree.

The Gemert field chapel honors this hermit saint and forms a tranquil spot in the landscape. Hikers often stop here to observe, take a break, or light a candle. The chapel is located near the Boerenbond Museum (Farmers' Union Museum) and is well-maintained by volunteers.
