Like the Peoenpark, the park owes its existence to Berlage's expansion plan before the Second World War. In that plan, a ring road was planned at the site of the park. Immediately after the war, the New Indies neighborhood was quickly completed and the West Indies neighborhood started in the fight against the housing shortage. Construction was also carried out in much larger concentrations than foreseen in the expansion plan. However, the idea of the ring road was maintained, so that the park remained undeveloped.
