The Damse Vaart is a canal that connects Bruges with the Westerschelde near Sluis in the Netherlands. Napoleon Bonaparte ordered it to be built, which is why it is often called Napoleonvaart. He wanted to create a network of waterways to move his troops undisturbed from one part of the country to the other.

In the meantime the Vaart has lost its strategic and economic importance, since the end of the Second World War only excursion boats have been sailing here. The aesthetic appeal, however, is still there, especially when the weather is clear you can see wonderfully far. If it has been freezing long enough, the canal becomes even more attractive - for friends (more or less) graceful figures. Because when the ice is 12 centimeters thick, the mayor releases the area for ice skating.

There was previously a canal between Bruges and Damme. Bruges mainly wanted a connection with the Zwin, which had been inaccessible since the seventeenth century. Just like Bruges, Damme owes its golden age to the years before the silting up and the flourishing trade. During the completion of the canal from Bruges to Sluis, beautiful buildings and even a market were demolished because the canal ran through the middle of Damme. In other words, Damme was once bigger than a flourishing town.

Skating is not only done in winter on the canal if the ice allows it. There has also been a summer swimming competition in the Damse Vaart for many years. Members of three Bruges swimming clubs are allowed to swim in a demarcated zone of the canal from May to October.
