Since October 1, 1885, Probstzella has been a through station on the Prussian State Railway's line from Leipzig via Gera, which continues in Bavaria via Kronach to Hochstadt-Marktzeuln. This once important inner-German connection is now served only by a regional express train. During the division of Germany, Probstzella served as a border station, with a building erected specifically for this purpose from 1976 onwards, which was demolished in 2008. On November 6, 2010, the "Grenzbahnhof Museum" opened in the station's historic reception building. It presents a detailed history of border controls at inner-German border stations.

The Probstzella train station is on the Nuremberg - Halle/Leipzig main line. Until the “reunification” it was a GDR border station. Almost twenty million travelers were checked, humiliated and harassed by passport controllers and customs officers. The trains from the west arrived with electric traction, were checked and had to be converted to steam or diesel.
After the “reunification” the train station lost its importance. There was no passport control. The trains were reconnected for a while until the line towards Saalfeld was electrified again. Then long-distance traffic only drove through.
That has also been over since 2017. Long-distance traffic was shifted to the newly built Nuremberg–Erfurt high-speed line.
The route to the Rennsteig to Lauscha was also closed.
The station only has a certain importance for freight traffic. The push locomotives that push heavy freight trains across the Franconian Forest are still stationed here.
