"To make flames shine all over Germany in honor of Bismarck": In addition, the German students called in 1898 after the death of Bismarck. Across the country, pillars and towers with crowning flamesshells were to be erected in honor of the deceased. In Bochum formed in 1908 a committee for the construction of a Bismarck tower. From over 650 submitted tower designs, the design of the Breslau architect Albrecht Friebe was selected, who was a pupil and collaborator of the famous Hans Poelzig. Friebes design was called "giant". The Bochum collected 100,000 marks for the construction.
On March 28, 1909, the foundation stone was laid in the city park, the opening took place on October 16, 1910. The 33 meter high Bismarck tower is the largest example of its kind. Its flames burned from 1910 to the 1920s.

Bochum's Bismarck Tower, at 33 meters the highest in North Rhine-Westphalia, offers an impressive all-round view of the city and region: on a good day, the view extends north as far as the Haardt.

From April 7th to November 1st, 2023, the Bismarck Tower is open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission is free.
