      The Pico Ruivo refuge reopened in 2019 after a renovation. Was closed for years. It's great to have a gastronomic offer in this location.

          The hut is located directly below the Pico Ruivo summit, you pass it on the way up. The house offers accommodation and rest options, as well as a beautiful photo opportunity from above in the surrounding impressive mountain landscape.

            stayed the night here after ascending from Ilha. It’s only 15/night to enjoy sunset and sunrise from Ruivo and when I came down after sunset the guy Luis had the fireplace going. Great experience I wonder why not more people use it. I was alone.

                    The Pico Ruivo Shelter House officially opened to the public with a new look and a more modern style, with a large and welcoming room, open to all visitors who venture on the trail to our shelter. At the house you can enjoy our mini library that has books about our fantastic island and acquire souvenirs such as magnets and postcards and also enjoy the original handicrafts made with love by our Madeiran artisans. It is a safe space for those who want to rest and be able to enjoy a drink such as teas, coffee, soft drinks, water or like the typical Madeiran poncha and our heady Madeira Wine and delight in honey cakes and homemade cakes or even consume.

                      Small hut with welcome amenities such as drinks, food and toilet, the latter costs €0.50. Not even outrageous prices, Coke €3.. when you consider where you consume this drink.

                              Below the summit is the Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo, a hut selling drinks and food. There is also a public toilet here, only for die-hards when I visited! Nevertheless, I would recommend a visit to the hut to everyone!

                                      The Casa de Abrigo is accessible only on foot and is located at a central junction of several hiking trails:

                                      PR1.2 – Vereda do Pico Ruivo:
                                      A 2.8 km, moderately difficult trail from Achada do Teixeira to the hut.

                                      PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro:
                                      A challenging but scenic trail from Pico do Arieiro, 7 km long, to the hut.
                                      PR1.1 – Vereda da Ilha:
                                      An 8.2 km descent from the hut to the village of Ilha with a 1,376 m elevation gain.
                                      PR1.3 – Vereda da Encumeada:
                                      An 11.2 km trail to Encumeada, which is currently (May 2025) closed.
