Hotel Dagmar is one of the city's most famous hotels and restaurants. The original house, which was on the market square before Hotel Dagmar was built, was destroyed in a fire in 1850, but city councilor and later mayor Laurids Thøgersen had a new courtyard built on the site in 1581. Most of the time in the 18th century, the courtyard served as the residence of the respective city president, who was a kind of lord mayor. The first city president to live in the house was Carsten Worm, grandson of the famous doctor and archaeologist Ole Worm (1588-1654). The last mayor of Ribe was Peter Ussing, who died in 1788. After that, the office of mayor was abolished.
Around 1800 the building was turned into an inn with the name ”Greisens Hotel” or ”Gæstgivergården” (”The Host's Farm”). The name ”Hotel Dagmar” was first created in 1912 in the course of a major renovation.
