The old prison in Ribe was built in 1546.
It was originally a chaplain's residence for the ordained priests at the cathedral.
The building was initially a single-story structure.
In 1841, the building was converted into a girls' school, and two floors were added on the upper floor.
For almost 100 years—from 1891 to 1989—the building served as a prison.
In 1990, the building was privately sold to Annitha Faurholt, who took it over after it had just been vacated by prisoners.
The building is a listed building. During its renovation, the Danish Forestry and Nature Agency emphasized the building's previous use, so that today it still bears clear traces of its former use as a detention center.

The former prison is now a hotel with 11 double rooms and a restaurant.
The hotel rooms were formerly prison cells and the old inspector's quarters.
In Den Gamle Arrest, the old prison cells are furnished as double rooms with a rustic and simple interior. The inspector's bedroom has a four-poster bed and a bathtub. Two of the cells and an attic room have private bathrooms/toilets.
Four of the rooms were formerly the former inspector's residence, as were the reception and the restaurant.
