References to the former railway line are repeatedly found along the hiking trail.

Construction of the railway line between Heiligenstadt and Schwebda began in 1911. The first section went into operation on August 28, 1914. The remaining line opened on October 1, 1914.

To overcome the steep sections between Heiligenstadt and Kalteneber, the use of rack and pinion locomotives was initially necessary (until 1922). Even today, sections with gradients of up to 5% still have to be negotiated. Another special feature is the hairpin bend in Fürstenhagen, where a water tower provided fuel for the locomotives. After the Frieda Viaduct was demolished in 1945, the line ended in Großtöpfer, just before the current Hessian state border.

The railway embankment of the former Schwedda-Heiligenstadt railway line (1914-1947) runs for an approx. 1.5 km long section, where you walk directly below the Dieteröder cliffs. The ascent and further ascent of the hiking trail to the clippers takes place at km 17.5 at the dirt road bridge (Rüstungen and Krombach).
