In Bolzano, the South Tyrolean capital with around 100,000 inhabitants, there is much to see, especially in the old town, where numerous sights are located. The undisputed focal point of the historic old town is undoubtedly Waltherplatz. It is named after the minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide, an important poet of the German High Middle Ages. A monument honoring the great poet stands in the center of the popular square, and numerous cafés and restaurants can be found all around. Other great sights can all be reached within walking distance.
In Laubengasse, for example, you'll find the Mercantile Museum, on Kornplatz the historic Weigh House, the old town hall from 1907, the fruit market, the Dominican Church, the Archaeological Museum with the Ötzi the Iceman, the Talferwiesen meadows, one of Bolzano's landmarks, the 14th-century Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary.
