      The line from Neuenmarkt to Bayreuth was the first Bavarian railway line to be built under a contract with the state (Lease Railway Act). The city of Bayreuth financed the construction of the route and then leased it to the Bavarian state.
      On November 28, 1853 it was opened by the Royal Bavarian State Railway as a branch line of the Ludwig-Sรผd-Nord-Bahn and one of the first branch lines in Bavaria. In 1905 the leased line was nationalized.
      From December 28, 1896, the Neuenmarkt โ€“ Bad Berneck railway branched off at Schlรถmen and was extended to Bischofsgrรผn in 1898. From Neuenmarkt to Schlรถmen, where the block was turned into a signal box, the trains also used the track of the leased railway. On the Whitsun holidays in 1986, a multiple unit train with several passenger cars ran the route for the last time. The section from Schlรถmen to Lanzendorf, which was last used by freight traffic, was finally shut down on June 30, 2006.
