The railway station, which was still outside of Bebras from 1848, was initially just a stopping point between Kassel and Gerstungen. With the opening of the Hanover-Frankfurt crossing in 1876, Bebra developed into a transport hub. After the division of Germany, an important inner-German border station was built here. However, with the decision in the 1980s to route the Hanover-Würzburg high-speed line past Bebra, the hub lost more and more of its importance. A further decline came with reunification in 1990 and the disappearance of the inner-German border. New life has recently come into the old walls, the locomotive shed (bebra-lokschuppen.de) is used as a secondary event location and the recently restored island building functions as a museum (bahnhof-bebra.de), tourist information and office Complex.

The station in Bebra was one of the most important railway junctions in Germany for a long time, but this changed with reunification and structural, political transport projects.
The station and its buildings were modernized as part of the city planning with a number of new projects (such as the converted locomotive shed into an event hall, the former station building into a railway museum with a permanent exhibition).
