The Marstallbrücke and Burgtor in Lübeck, Germany, represent a fascinating blend of medieval history and early 20th-century engineering. Situated at the northern entrance to Lübeck's historic Old Town, the Burgtor is a majestic late Gothic city gate, standing proudly at an elevation of around 51 meters. And another working classic from Wilhelmine times: The Marstall Bridge with its formerly three structures for railways, cars and pedestrians. The railway structure is decommissioned, the remainder is waiting for a fundamental overhaul, but is difficult because technical requirements and monument protection aspects can not be reconciled so easily.

The lift bridges at the Burgtor have been entered as technical monuments in the monuments book of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. Its towers reveal the architectural conception of the Wilhelmine era particularly well. They are built in a neo-Gothic style and are not just decorative accessories, but machine houses for the bridge systems.

Both the road lift bridge and the railway bridge are moved hydraulically. A bridge (bridge superstructure) and a counterweight in the operating tower are connected to each other by a hydraulic system filled with a glycerine-water mixture.

The lifting bridges were built between 1896 and 1900 in connection with the construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. Currently they are due to their structural condition out of order and rest in an upscale state. Almost only from the ship can be seen the distinctive coat of arms with the double-headed eagle of the city of Lübeck.
