Last but not least, the almost 2.5 meter high "Windsbraut", which stands on its 3 meter high stone base on the ship's bridge, ensures that the wind never goes out in Flensburg. Even in Germanic mythology, this female figure played a role in personifying the whirling storm.

In 1972, the Flensburg Beautification Association celebrated its 100th anniversary and launched a competition for a new sculpture, which was won by two teachers from the Flensburg Werkkunstschule, Hermann Menzel and Harald Egler. The very graphic sculpture gets its tension from the combination of opposites. The surface is partly painted golden yellow, partly metallic and is characterized by the alternation of areas that are curved outwards and inwards (convex and concave). Everything radiates dynamism: the blowing hair, the moving arms, the billowing sail.

Herman Menzel
Herman Menzel was born in 1899. He was a teacher for sculptors at the Flensburger Werkkunstschule. He died in 1985.
