There are supposed to be places where the sky is full of violins. In Flensburg – there are shoes hanging up there. Stretched on a line above Norderstrasse. But why?
There aren't many trends that originate in Flensburg and only arrive in Berlin years later. Shoefiti is one of them. That is the name of the art that has been conquering the city since 2007, which is otherwise known primarily for its dots and swing tops on beer bottles.

They hang high above the otherwise rather dreary Norderstrasse – sneakers, rubber boots, sandals. Shoes of all kinds that have one thing in common: the old overhead line of the former Flensburg tram from which they dangle.

Nobody knows exactly where they come from, only that there have been more and more of them in recent years, until the Christmas decorations finally had to go and the Nordertor – once the secret landmark of Flensburg and located on the same street – was only given a supporting role in city tours.
You can certainly imagine that today there are at least as many legends as there are shoes on the line.

For example, the story of the annoyed husband who once threw his wife's smelly shoes over the wire ropes. Or the story of the discotheque visitors of the former Roxy Club who played a joke at night and, drunk, threw their shoes in the air until they finally got caught in the ropes. And then there is the story of the owner of the adjacent skate shop who asked his customers to throw their old shoes over the line after they had bought new ones from him.

The US-based Travel+Leisure doesn't care at all where the shoes actually come from. "Regardless of its original purpose, Norderstraße has become an unofficial landmark of Flensburg and inspires tourists to do their own part by leaving their shoes behind," says the magazine's justification for naming Norderstraße one of the 18 craziest streets in the world, alongside streets in Sydney, Taipei and Buenos Aires.
