Cahors in the Lot department of Occitania, an ancient city of the Gauls expanded by the Romans
and in the Middle Ages an important stop on the Via Podiensis, part of the Way of St. James.
In the city there are numerous hospices, pilgrim hostels (Gîtes, chambres d'hôtes).The pilgrims
leave the city via the Pont Valentré, Cahor's landmark)
Addendum: if you continue east along the Lot valley you come to Cabrerets on the Célé, a tributary of the Lot. Here is the famous cave of Peche Merle with its beautiful cave paintings from the Upper Paleolithic (Gravettian) around 20,000 BC. The cave can be visited ,as well as the associated prehistoric museum. Please reserve in advance, only a limited number of visitors are allowed.

The Pont Valentré in Cahors is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site as part of the Routes of Saint-Jacques de Compostela.
Legend has it that the architect of the bridge, tired of the slow pace of the work, made a pact with the Devil to facilitate its completion. The demon had to give up taking the man's soul if he failed to fulfill a mission entrusted to him. Just before the bridge was completed, the architect gave the devil a sieve, asking him to fetch water for his workers. The demon could not fulfill his mission, had to abandon the idea of taking the man's soul but swore revenge. He sent a small imp who every night removed the last stone from the upper northwest corner of the tower. The architect in charge of the restoration had this legend immortalized with a sculpted stone representing the devil trying to tear the stone from the bridge but not succeeding, his fingers being stuck in the joints of the stone.
