This cathedral has 2 domes, like the domed churches of Byzantium.
Construction began in the late 11th century, but it is said to have taken another 400 years to complete.

Saint Stephen (Saint Etienne), to whom Cahors Cathedral is dedicated, is one of the seven first deacons of the early Jerusalem community and is also the first martyr (martyr) of early Christianity. The church remembers him on Boxing Day, December 26th.
When Stephen uttered his vision of the open heaven, "And being filled with the Holy Spirit, he looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Acts chapter 7 verse 55), the people were so indignant that that they drove him out of the city and stoned him.

A facade similar to that of a medieval castle, Romanesque-style portals, Byzantine cupolas and Gothic arches: this is how the visitor perceives the cathedral when he takes even a few steps around it . The lack of architectural homogeneity is the result of the multiple modifications and extensions that took place from the start of construction at the end of the 11th century until the last important measures of the 19th century. Two large domes dominate the Romanesque nave.
They represent the most extraordinary example of the so-called "Aquitanian" architectural style: 16 meters in diameter and 32 meters high; only the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul has a taller dome.
Also noteworthy is the small, golden church of Saint-Svair, with its large statue of Emperor Charlemagne, who presented it to the church of Cahors.
