Saint Anthony is the patron saint of Ladenburg. The chapel, which was destroyed several times in the 17th century, hosted the first Protestant service in Ladenburg in 1553. Next to the Anthony Chapel is the city's former hospital. It was first documented in 1366. This building, too, was destroyed several times in the 17th century and was not rebuilt until 1739. In 1809, the hospital was relocated to the Schriesheim Gate before being sold along with the chapel in 1810.

The Holy Spirit Hospital is an outstanding and defining testimony to Ladenburg's history and social welfare. First mentioned in 1366, the hospital was the only public welfare institution of immense importance for the city's poor, elderly, and sick during the Middle Ages and early modern times. Two-story, eaves-fronted hospital building (No. 1), solid ground floor, half-timbered upper floor (inscribed in 1739), gable roof; The core of the late Gothic hospital chapel, dedicated to St. Anthony the Hermit, features a three-chamber choir (No. 3). A period window with a figure of the church's patron saint, walled up to form a niche, is located in the choir. The remaining choir windows were added in Baroque style only at the beginning of the 20th century. The northwest side was glazed during the conversion to a residential building in the early 19th century. The Kanzelbach stream flows beneath the choir, for the frame of which stones from the former Roman city wall were used. First documented mention of the Citizens' Hospital in 1366. The building was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War (1622) and the War of the Palatinate Succession (1688), rebuilt in 1739. In 1809, the hospital was relocated to a house at the Schreisheim Gate. The chapel was deconsecrated and sold to private individuals, along with the hospital building on Färbergasse and the outbuildings. The chapel was used as an agricultural property, and the hospital building also served as a blacksmith's shop for a time. The timber framing was exposed in 1957. St. Anthony's Chapel was renovated in 1994. It was renovated again in 2009, and the foundation of the hospital chapel was improved.
