In the founding deed of the Stephanikirche from 1139 the today's Liebfrauenkirche is mentioned as "Marktkirche St. Veit". In a papal letter from 1220 it is called "Sancta Maria Bremensis". As elsewhere, Holy Mary was referred to as "Our Lady". Accordingly, today's Protestant congregation of the church calls itself the congregation of Our Dear Women. The square around the building is officially called Our Dear Women Cemetery and, colloquially, the Liebfrauenkirchhof.
