This chapel stands above Thurndorf on the 642 m high Calvary, which served geometers as a trigonometric reference point as early as the 19th century. The year the foundation stone was laid is engraved above its portal: 1752. In order to get money for an early, necessary expansion, Pope Clemens XII. In 1762 he even issued a letter of indulgence. This means that the Calvary Chapel must have been a much-visited place of pilgrimage at the time. A few services are still held in the summer. In 1969 the chapel was robbed and threatened to fall into ruin. Only a renovation in the 80s saved this gem.

Every "Calvary", as here at Thurndorf, is reminiscent of "Golgotha" ("skull height") near Jerusalem, the place of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. A Way of the Cross often leads up the mountain or hill with the - nowadays mostly 14 - stations, early medieval precursors had only 7 stations and were sometimes also referred to as "Gang to the Seven Footfalls". In some areas of Germany, after the fourteenth station, the burial of Jesus, there is another station: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. These Ways of the Cross broaden the view of the Easter hope perspective of overcoming death and suffering.
