The hanging beech that greets the visitor at the entrance to the castle garden is quite an impressive tree. The two-stemmed (!) Tree was planted in the castle garden in 1860 and is over 160 years old.

It is quite time-consuming to look after, as the triangular straps hold the treetop of the two trunks together. A fungal attack was also found in the root area of the tree.

A magnet for visitors is the huge hanging beech on the castle island at the north bastion of the castle. It was planted when the Burggarten was redesigned after the major renovations to the palace – around 1860. The grafted red beech with the funny English name Weeping Beech is a good 20 meters high, but its special feature is the hanging branches. They literally envelop the walkers on the circular path around the castle and thus create space for legends and myths. This beech has been considered a love tree since time immemorial. Couples who kiss under it will be blessed with everlasting love. So it's no wonder that many hearts and declarations of love are carved into the bark.

But the times when lovers sat in it or children climbed around on the heavily branched branches are over. Because the hanging beech needs protection, it is sick. Years ago, tree expert Thomas Franiel diagnosed fungal infestation in the root area. To support its stability, the main branches of the expansive crown were tied together with tension belts. The 160-year-old tree is still vital. But at this age, beeches are past their prime. Now good wishes must help the wishing tree.
