The Gottesacker plateau is north of the Hoher Ifen in the Kleinwalsertal and is easiest to reach via the Ifenbahn (Ifen 3). The rugged limestone expanses are 125-million-year-old remnants of coral reefs and other marine life from the Tethys Sea, eroded and riddled by millions of years of rainfall. The plateau is dangerous, Gottesacker means cemetery and some people have already disappeared into the crevices there. But if you stick to a few rules, you can walk or cross it without any particular risk. The Gottesacker plateau should only be walked on when it is dry, the weather is stable and visibility is clear. It is essential to stay on the (well-marked) paths and get back to civilization before dusk sets in. There is nothing to drink the whole way and little shade, so you should have enough water with you. The Hahnenköpflebahn with the associated mountain station is closed in summer.
