Staldgården is east of Koldinghus Castle and was built at the same time as the castle, in the 1300s. The buildings that exist today were built in 1600 and consist of three wings. They were mainly used by the military.
The first building on the site was a kind of outer bailey of the main castle Koldinghus. From the mid-1500s the king used them as stables. In the time of Christian IV there were strong tower-like pavilions on the two corners to the east. But they were later removed. From the late 1600s, Staldgården had increased tactical military influence on the location of the cavalry regiment. In 1718 Staldgården was the home of the cavalry and the first Koldinghus Reiter district and later the Holstein
Regiment. During the wars with England, 1808-1814, the large buildings were used to store military equipment.
