    Despite being much shorter than the infamous Striding Edge, Swrirral Edge's exit onto Helvellyn's summit plateau is very steep and narrow, which can make it extremely hazardous in winter, in high winds or when very wet. As with its neighbour, it is exhilarating, breathtaking and boasts magnificent views!

      Climbing Swirral Edge to or descending from Helvellyn is a strenuous and adventurous undertaking. But also fun to do.

        Novice walkers should not under estimate Swrirral edge , certainly worth the effort .

          This is the easier of two ridge climbs that makes up the horseshoe of Helvellyn. Its bigger brother, striding edge, is on the opposite side of Red Tarn and is much more exposed. There may be bits that are a bit of a scramble but on the whole this is the easiest direct route up from Glenridding.

                I always prefer to go up a scramble than go down as it is more fun but if you come up Striding Edge then the only option with Swirral is to go down it. Will come up it next time.

                    Very rocky ridge to go over which takes you to Helvellyn. Narrow and can be slippy when wet or in winter so take your time.

                      In my opinion this is the route of choice for me. If you are not keen on scrambling but still want the epic views then go this way. Easy on the legs and will be spectacular during summer on a clear day. It's a must.

                              On the traditional circuit, this is the way down Helvellyn. It's shorter than Striding Edge but not to be underestimated as its very exposed. Choose a day with little wind!
