          The Teufelsrutsch (Devil's Slide) is a wooded hilltop of porphyry rock near Wendelsheim in Rheinhessen, formed in prehistoric times by the Wiesbach stream. The plateau, located approximately 260 meters above sea level, ends to the west with a 50-meter-deep drop.

          The name of the hill originates from a legend according to which the devil was tricked by local residents into sliding down this steep, thorn-covered slope on his bare bottom. Afterward, he was never seen there again.

          About 20 meters below the summit is the so-called "Schinderhannes Cave" – a walkable, over 60-meter-long tunnel, the original construction of which dates back to the 14th century. The narrow path leading there is quite "adventurous." Mercury, which occurs in the form of cinnabar, was mined in the tunnel; it is also said to have served as a hideout for the infamous robber chief Schinderhannes.
