As a surfing, swimming and sailing paradise, Lake Baldeney is one of the most important recreational and water sports centers in the Ruhr area. The largest Ruhr reservoir stretches over 8 km long and up to 650 m wide between wooded hills in the south of Essen, lined with lawns, cycling, inline skating and hiking trails, beaches, boat docks and restaurants.

At this point the MOOSBACH flows into Lake Baldeney.

Lake Baldeney, dammed in 1931 as a reservoir and to purify the Ruhr River waters, is now a recreational area of national importance. Rowing clubs, sailing, and surfing schools around the 2.7 sq km lake invite you to enjoy active leisure activities. Once a year, the elite of German sailors meet here for the Essen Week, Germany's largest inland lake regatta.

The 14.7 km lap around the lake on inline skates, on foot, or by bike is one of the greatest leisure activities for the sporty among lake visitors. Those who prefer a more comfortable experience can explore the wooded shores of the lake and the Ruhr from the ships of the "White Fleet."

An eye-catcher in the heights: Villa Hügel, the residence of the Krupp industrial family until the 1940s and today the venue for high-profile art history exhibitions. The Baldeney White Fleet sets sail from April to October – for a circular tour of Essen's local waters or a long-distance cruise on the Ruhr to the neighboring city of Mülheim – with a shore leave in Essen-Kettwig included upon request. From June to September, scheduled cruises also operate on the MS innogy, a methanol-powered, CO2-neutral electric ship.

The Baldeneysteig, a roughly 27-kilometer circular trail around Lake Baldeney,

with its well-marked hiking trails, provides a unique nature experience.
