if you have time, visit the Köhlerhütte near Abbecke, where the kilns are still regularly infected. (please pay attention to the times)

            The charcoal burner's life
In March the charcoal burners went into the forest. They built a tent-shaped hut near the cabbage site. They leaned more poles in a circle on a frame made of wooden poles and covered this framework with plaster and bark. They left a hole in the top through which smoke could escape. To keep it from raining, they installed a cover over it - the “hat” or “cuckoo”. The entrance was also covered and closed with a door.

The charcoal burners lived in this hut until the day of penance and prayer and led a frugal but free life. They used a bed made of sacks filled with leaves to rest. We washed at a stream nearby.

The charcoal burners' work was strenuous. Every two hours, several piles had to be checked to ensure that the embers neither went out nor burst into flames.

Sleeping through the night was out of the question. That's why the charcoal burners kept their work clothes on even at night.

At the end of the day the 'Hillebille' sounded. A beech board hung between trees was hit hard with a wooden hammer so that the sound echoed through the forest. This is how the charcoal burners transmitted messages to each other over long distances.

The hut itself is not a highlight. Unless you like the smell of what the hut is -unfortunately- often used for...
