St. Stephen's Church is located on what used to be the late Roman road, today's Wessenbergstrasse; at that time it stood outside the area around the episcopal church and the inhabited settlement. Archaeological excavations carried out north of the church in the 1950s showed that St. Stephen's Church was in the area of a late Roman burial ground of the 3rd-4th centuries. century lay; possibly it served as a small cemetery church.

Saint Stephen (or in other spelling Stefan, both variants also partly with the Latin ending "... us"), namesake of this Konstanz church, is one of the seven first deacons of the early Jerusalem community and is the first martyr (blood witness) of the early one Christianity. The Church will remember him on Boxing Day, December 26th.
When Stephen said aloud his vision of the open heaven, "But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven, saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Acts chapter 7 verse 55), the people were so indignant, that they drove him out of town and stoned him.
