The Kreuzstein standing here is considered a natural monument, the exact age of which is not known. In addition to their function as boundary markers, such stone monuments were often erected as atonement for a violent crime.

Since it was already mentioned in 1569, it cannot be a "Schwedenstein," as they were only active around Kronach during the Thirty Years' War, starting in 1632. It is also not an expiation stone, but rather a judicial boundary stone (Fraischgrenzstein) between the Kronach district and the neighboring knightly territories of Haig and Burggrub (similar to the nearby "Leichstein" near Rottelsdorf).
