During World War II, Adolf Hitler decided that Europe should be fortified towards the west. The result was the Atlantic Wall - a comprehensive coastal defense system from the North Cape in the north to the Pyrenees in the south. The Allies were supposed to keep around 8,000 concrete structures, of which around 2,000 were actual bunkers, away from the European mainland.

In Denmark, the many bunkers along the North Sea coast were built by Danes who worked for the Germans. The bunkers were dug into the outermost rows of dunes, where they were well hidden. Today the North Sea has uncovered many bunkers and for this reason there are large concrete blocks scattered all over the shore on the beach at the Husby Klitplantage.

It is exciting to look at a bunker up close, but remember that they are very attacked by wind and weather and that many of the rebars are exposed. Therefore there is a risk of injury.
