In September 2017 it became known that the church bell hung in 1934 had a Nazi swastika on it. The Jacobskirche in Herxheim am Berg, the Redeemer Church in Rilchingen-Hanweiler and the Michaelkirche in Faßberg have similar bells. Peace activists have criticized the continued use of the bell. Depending on the context, the use of signs of unconstitutional organizations is also a criminal offense (§ 86a StGB). On March 14, 2018, the church and chapel board of the parish of Balge and the chapel parish of Schweringen agreed to continue operating the bell, even though the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover had proposed to finance a replacement of the bell. On the other hand, the pastor complained on March 16, 2018 that only the board of directors of the Schweringen chapel community should have voted on it; the bell therefore remained out of service. On March 29, 2018, it became known that unknown persons had sanded down the swastika on the bell.

An expert judged the bell to be unusable, but this was not to be confirmed later. In a lengthy discussion process, it was decided to first dedicate the bell, to rework it artistically and then to rededicate it again. In November 2018 the bell was deconsecrated.
